Chapter 1: Contents of the Rāmāyaṇa Summarized
Text 1.1.26

सर्वलक्षणसम्पन्ना नारीणामुत्तमा वधूः।
सीताप्यनुगता रामं शशिनं रोहिणी यथा॥

sarva-lakṣaṇa-sampannā nārīṇām uttamā vadhūḥ
sītāpy anugatā rāmaṁ śaśinaṁ rohiṇī yathā

sarva-lakṣaṇa-sampannā = endowed with all auspicious symptoms; nārīṇām = among women; uttamā = the best; vadhūḥ= bride; sītā = Sītā; api = also; anugatā = followed; rāmam = Rāma; śaśinam = the moon; rohiṇī = Rohiṇī; yathā = just as.

Endowed with all auspicious symptoms, the best bride among women, Sītā also followed Rāma just as Rohiṇī follows the moon.

Sītā-devī was endowed with all auspicious symptoms noted by authorities in the Sāmudrika to be symptoms of the best of women. She is the best young wife among women because she has the above-mentioned characteristics and so is best among all women. She is nary-uttamā, the best of females, to suit the puruṣottama, the best of males.

Vadhūḥ can indicate that she was the daughter-in-law of Daśaratha or a newly married bride [39].

Sītā: The name itself signifies that she was born from a sītā,
a furrow [40]. This indicates that she was not born from the womb of any woman and so she is not inferior in beauty to those who reside in the celestial regions.

Sītā-devī also followed Rāma, like Lakṣmaṇa. She followed Rāma, her heart attracted to His boundless beauty. And she followed Him like Rohiṇī follows Candra. Rohiṇī is an extraordinary wife of Candra:

variṣṭhā sarva-nārīṇām eṣā ca divi devatā
rohiṇī na vinā candraṁ muhūrtam api dṛśyate

“Rohiṇī is the most excellent of all deities among women. [The star] Rohiṇī is not seen even for a moment in the sky without Candra (the moon).”

Sītā followed Rāma not just because she was attracted to His beauty, but because of her adherence to the principle of chastity like Rohinī [who follows] Candra [despite] his defects. Sītā-devī will reveal this to Anasūyā [at the end of Canto 2 of Rāmāyaṇa].
