Chapter 1: Contents of the Rāmāyaṇa Summarized
Text 1.1.31

चित्रकूटं गते रामे पुत्रशोकातुरस्तथा।
राजा दशरथः स्वर्गं जगाम विलपन्सुतम्॥

citrakūṭaṁ gate rāme putra-śokāturas tathā
rājā daśarathaḥ svargaṁ jagāma vilapan sutam

citrakūṭam = Citrakūṭa; gate = while Rāma had gone to; rāme = Rāma; putra-śokāturaḥ tathā = overwhelmed with distress for his son; rājā = king; daśarathaḥ = Daśaratha; svargam = the heavens; jagāma = attained; vilapan = while lamenting; sutam = about his son

While Rāma had gone to Citrakūṭa, overwhelmed with distress for his son, King Daśaratha attained the heavens while lamenting about his son.

The previous verse pointed out that Lakṣmaṇa engaged in personal services to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. From the current verse, Nārada Muni reveals how Bharata carried out the orders of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. This verse introduces that subject.

Daśaratha was overwhelmed with distress for his son, that is, he was deeply pained that he was not able to see his son. He lamented about his son, that is, he began to prattle about his son.
