Chapter 16: Daśaratha Benedicted
Text 1.16.11-17

ततो वै यजमानस्य पावकादतुलप्रभम्।
प्रादुर्भूतं महद्भूतं महावीर्यं महाबलम्॥

कृष्णं रक्ताम्बरधरं रक्ताक्षं दुन्दुभिस्वनम्।
स्निग्धहर्यक्षतनुजश्मश्रुप्रवरमूर्धजम्॥

शुभलक्षणसम्पन्नं दिव्याभरणभूषितम्।
शैलशृङ्गसमुत्सेधं दृप्तशार्दूलविक्रमम्॥

दिवाकरसमाकारं दीप्तानलशिखोपमम्।
सिंहस्कन्धं महाबाहुमङ्गदद्वयशोभितम्॥

ताराविकृतकल्पेन हारेणोरसि राजितम्।
ताराधिपतिकल्पैश्च दन्तैः परमशोभितम्॥

ज्वलन्निव च तेजोभिर्दीपयन्निव च श्रिया।
तप्तजाम्बूनदमयैर्भूषणैर्भूषितं च यत्॥

तप्तजाम्बूनदमयीं राजतान्तपरिच्छदाम्।
दिव्यपायससम्पूर्णां पात्रीं पत्नीमिव प्रियाम्।
प्रगृह्य विपुलां दोर्भ्यां स्वयं मायामयीमिव॥

tato vai yajamānasya pāvakād atula-prabham
prādurbhūtaṁ
mahad bhūtaṁ mahā-vīryaṁ mahā-balam

kṛṣṇaṁ raktāmbaradharaṁ raktākṣaṁ dundubhi-svanam
snigdha-haryakṣa-tanuja-śmaśru-pravara-mūrdhajam

śubha-lakṣaṇa-sampannaṁ divyābharaṇa-bhūṣitam
śaila-śṛṅga-samutsedhaṁ
dṛpta-śārdūla-vikramam

divākara-samākāraṁ dīptānala-śikhopamam
siṁha-skandhaṁ
mahā-bāhum aṅgada-dvaya-śobhitam

tārāvikṛta-kalpena hāreṇorasi rājitam
tārādhipati-kalpaiś
ca dantaiḥ parama-śobhitam

jvalann iva ca tejobhir dīpayann iva ca śriyā
tapta-jāmbūnadamayair
bhūṣaṇair bhūṣitaṁ ca yat

tapta-jāmbūnadamayīṁ rājatānta-paricchadām
divya-pāyasa-sampūrṇāṁ
pātrīṁ patnīm iva priyām
pragṛhya
vipulāṁ dorbhyāṁ svayaṁ māyāmayīm iva

tataḥ vai = after Lord Viṣṇu had disappeared from the assembly of the demigods; yajamānasya = while the sacrifice was going on; pāvakāt = from the sacred fire; atula-prabham = that being was of incomparable effulgence; prādurbhūtam = appeared; mahat = a great; bhūtam = being; mahā-vīryam = great prowess and; mahā-balam = great strength; kṛṣṇam = he was dark blue in complexion; rakta-ambaradharam = he wore a red cloth; rakta-akṣam = his eyes were reddish; dundubhi-svanam = his voice was as deep as the sound of the dundubhi drum; snigdha-haryakṣa-tanuja-śmaśru-pravara-mūrdhajam = the hairs on his body were shining, like that of a lion. He had a long beard and hair on his head; śubha-lakṣaṇa-sampannam = he was endowed with auspicious symptoms; divya-ābharaṇa-bhūṣitam = adorned with divine ornaments; śaila-śṛṅga-samutsedham = as tall as a mountain peak; dṛpta-śārdūla-vikramam = frightening with the gait of a proud tiger; divākara-sama-ākāram = like the sun in effulgence; dīpta anala-śikha upamam = and like a brilliant fire flame in sharpness of illumination; siṁha-skandham = he had the shoulders of a lion; mahā-bāhum = great arms; aṅgada-dvaya-śobhitam = shining with two bracelets; tārā-avikṛta-kalpena = that resembled a straight line of stars; hāreṇa = with a necklace; urasi = on his chest; rājitam = he shone; tārā-adhipati-kalpaiḥ ca = like the moon, the Lord of the stars; dantaiḥ = with teeth that appeared; parama-śobhitam = he was very splendid; jvalan = burning; iva = as if; ca = and; tejobhiḥ = with heat; dīpayan = illuminating; iva = as if; ca = and; śriyā = with his beauty; tapta-jāmbūnadamayaiḥ = made of molten brilliant gold; bhūṣaṇaiḥ = with ornaments; bhūṣitam ca yat = he was decorated; tapta-jāmbūnadamayīm = made of molten gold; rājata-anta-paricchadām = that vessel was covered with a silver plate; divya-pāyasa-sampūrṇām = and filled up to the brim with divine pāyasa sweet rice; pātrīm = vessel; patnīm = wife; iva = as if it was as; priyām = his beloved; pragṛhya = held; vipulām = a large; dorbhyām = with his arms; svayam = he personally; māyāmayīm = a magical vessel; iva = it was as.

After Lord Viṣṇu had disappeared from the assembly of the demigods, while the sacrifice was going on, from the sacred fire appeared a great being. That being was of incomparable effulgence, great prowess and great strength. He was dark blue in complexion. He wore a red cloth. His eyes were reddish. His voice was as deep as the sound of the dundubhi drum. The hairs on his body were shining, like that of a lion. He had a long beard and hair on his head. He was endowed with auspicious symptoms, adorned with divine ornaments, as tall as a mountain peak, frightening with the gait of a proud tiger, like the sun in effulgence and like a brilliant fire flame with a sharp illumination.1 He had the shoulders of a lion, great arms shining with two bracelets. He shone with a necklace that resembled a straight line of stars on his chest. He was very splendid with teeth that appeared like the moon, the Lord of the stars. As if burning with heat, and as if illuminating with his beauty, he was decorated with ornaments made of molten brilliant gold. He personally held a large vessel made of molten gold with his arms as if it was his beloved wife. That vessel was covered with a silver plate and filled up to the brim with divine pāyasa sweet rice. It was as if a magical vessel.

Then, the author indicates that the Supreme Personality of Godhead incarnated in four forms as a result of the Putra-kāmeṣṭi sacrifice. A person sent by Prajāpati Brahmā gave Daśaratha pāyasa sweet rice. The great being was a person and he appeared even while the sacrificial offerings were being offered in oblation. That being was like the sun in shape and a bright fire flame with extremely sharp illumination. The vessel that he held was māyāmayīm iva, “as if a magical vessel,” for it was too astonishing to be possible. Because that vessel was too large to be held by his hands, he held it with his arms.
