Chapter 18: The Advent of Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa, Bharata and Śatrughna
Text 1.18.13

भरतो नाम कैकेय्यां जज्ञे सत्यपराक्रमः।
साक्षाद्विष्णोश्चतुर्भागः सर्वैः समुदितो गुणैः॥

भरतो नाम कैकेय्यां जज्ञे सत्यपराक्रमः।
साक्षाद्विष्णोश्चतुर्भागः सर्वैः समुदितो गुणैः॥

bharataḥ = Bharata; nāma = a son named; kaikeyyām = to Kaikeyī; jajñe = was born; satya-parākramaḥ = of true prowess; sākṣād-viṣṇoḥ = directly from Lord Viṣṇu; catur-bhāgaḥ = He was manifested from one-fourth of the pāyasa that emanated; sarvaiḥ = with all; samuditaḥ = He was completely endowed; guṇaiḥ = auspicious qualities.

[Immediately after Rāma’s birth,] a son named Bharata of true prowess was born to Kaikeyī. He was manifested from one-fourth of the pāyasa that emanated from Lord Viṣṇu.1 He was completely endowed with all auspicious qualities.

Bharata and others were born in accordance with the queens’ eating the pāyasa. Bharata was completely endowed with all the auspicious qualities described in relation to Lord Rāma.

1 This translation of viṣṇoś catur-bhāgaḥ is based on the translation of a similar part of text 11. So is the case with viṣṇor ardha-samanvitau in text 14.
