Chapter 2: Lord Brahmā Instructs Vālmīki
Text 1.2.10

तस्मात्तु मिथुनादेकं पुमांसं पापनिश्चयः।
जघान वैरनिलयो निषादस्तस्य पश्यतः॥

tasmāt tu mithunād ekaṁ pumāṁsaṁ pāpa-niścayaḥ
jaghāna vaira-nilayo niṣādas tasya paśyataḥ

tasmāt tu = the; mithunāt = of the [krauñca bird] couple; ekam = one of; pumāṁsam = the male bird; pāpa-niścayaḥ = certainly sinful; jaghāna = killed; vaira-nilayaḥ = and an abode of enmity; niṣādaḥ = a hunter; tasya paśyataḥ = [even while the sage] was watching.

Even while the sage was watching, a hunter, certainly sinful and an abode of enmity, killed one of the krauñca bird couple, the male bird.

Pāpa-niścayaḥ: The hunter was certainly sinful; he was so cruel that he killed one of the birds even while they were mating. He was vaira-nilayaḥ, endowed with his natural enmity towards all creatures.
