Chapter 20: Daśaratha Refuses to Give Rāma
Text 1.20.4
इमे शूराश्च विक्रान्ता भृत्या मेऽस्त्रविशारदाः।
योग्या रक्षोगणैर्योद्धुं न रामं नेतुमर्हसि॥
ime śūrāś ca vikrāntā bhṛtyā me ’stra-viśāradāḥ
yogyā rakṣo-gaṇair yoddhuṁ na rāmaṁ netum arhasi
ime = here; śūrāḥ ca = are heroes; vikrāntāḥ = of infallible prowess; bhṛtyāḥ = servants; me = my; astra-viśāradāḥ = experienced in weaponry; yogyāḥ = they are eligible; rakṣaḥ-gaṇaiḥ = with the rākṣasas; yoddhum = for fighting in war; na = not; rāmam = Rāma; netum = take; arhasi = you should.
My servants here are heroes of infallible prowess, experienced in weaponry. They are eligible for fighting in war with the rākṣasas. You should not take Rāma.
