Canto 1 - Boyhood
Bāla-kāṇḍa
Chapter 29: The History of Siddhāśrama
Text 1.29.34
त्रीन्क्रमानथ भिक्षित्वा प्रतिगृह्य च मानदः।
आक्रम्य लोकान्लोकात्मा सर्वलोकहिते रतः॥
trīn kramān atha bhikṣitvā pratigṛhya ca mānadaḥ
ākramya lokān lokātmā sarva-loka-hite rataḥ
trīn = three; kramān atha = steps; bhikṣitvā = having begged and; pratigṛhya ca = having received them; mānadaḥ = that respectful Lord; ākramya = took over; lokān = all the worlds; loka-ātmā = for He is the soul of all the worlds; sarva-loka-hite rataḥ = and is engaged in the welfare of all worlds.
Having begged for three steps and having received them, that respectful Lord took over all the worlds, for He is the soul of all the worlds and is engaged in the welfare of all worlds.
Mānadaḥ indicates that Lord Vāmana was not filled with conceit when He begged for the three steps of land from Bali Mahārāja. In the form of a dwarf, Vāmana, He begged for three steps of land, but in a form that pervaded all the worlds, He crossed over all worlds.
