Chapter 30: Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa Protect Viśvāmitra’s Sacrifice

विचेतनं विघूर्णन्तं शीतेषुबलताडितम्।
निरस्तं दृश्य मारीचं रामोलक्ष्मणमब्रवीत्॥
vicetanaṁ vighūrṇantaṁ śīteṣu-bala-tāḍitam
nirastaṁ dṛśya mārīcaṁ rāmo lakṣmaṇam abravīt
vicetanam = senseless; vighūrṇantam = reeling; śīteṣu-bala-tāḍitam = thrown off by the power of Śīteṣu; nirastam = and beaten; dṛśya = seeing; mārīcam = Mārīca; rāmaḥ = Rāma; lakṣmaṇam = to Lakṣmaṇa; abravīt = spoke as follows.
Seeing Mārīca senseless, reeling, thrown off and beaten by the power of Śīteṣu, Rāma spoke as follows to Lakṣmaṇa.

Śīteṣu is the Mānava weapon.1 Lord Rāma spared Mārīca’s life so that he could carry out another required task in the future.
