Chapter 36: Umā Curses the Demigods
Text 1.36.1

उक्तवाक्ये मुनौ तस्मिन्नुभौ राघवलक्ष्मणौ।
अभिनन्द्य कथां वीरावूचतुर्मुनिपुङ्गवम्॥

ukta-vākye munau tasminn ubhau rāghava-lakṣmaṇau
abhinandya
kathāṁ vīrāv ūcatur muni-puṅgavam

ukta-vākye = when had answered Their queries; munau = sage; tasmin = the; ubhau = the two; rāghava-lakṣmaṇau = Rāghava and Lakṣmaṇa; abhinandya = thanked him and; kathām = for narrating the history of Gaṅgā; vīrau = heroes; ūcatuḥ = spoke as follows; muni-puṅgavam = to the best of sages.

When the sage had answered the queries of Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, the two heroes thanked him for narrating the history of Gaṅgā and spoke to the best of sages as follows.

In the previous chapter, Lord Śrī Rāma asked Viśvāmitra to tell him how Gaṅgā became a river traversing the three worlds. Viśvāmitra described how she traversed through the skies and the heavenly planets. Desiring to know how she traversed the third pathway, Lord Rāma asked Viśvāmitra who answered Him in this chapter.
