Chapter 36: Umā Curses the Demigods
Text 1.36.29

एष ते विस्तरो राम शैलपुत्र्या निवेदितः।
गङ्गायाः प्रभवं चैव शृणु मे सहलक्ष्मण॥

eṣa te vistaro rāma śaila-putryā niveditaḥ
gaṅgāyāḥ
prabhavaṁ caiva śṛṇu me saha-lakṣmaṇa

eṣaḥ = thus; te = You; vistaraḥ = in detail; rāma = O Rāma; śaila-putryāḥ = about the elder daughter of Himavān; niveditaḥ = I have told; gaṅgāyāḥ = of Gaṅgā; prabhavam ca eva = about the influential power; śṛṇu me = listen to me; saha-lakṣmaṇa = and Lakṣmaṇa.

O Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, I have related in detail the history of the elder daughter of Himavān. Now, listen to the influential power of Gaṅgā.

Lord Rāma had previously requested Śrī Viśvāmitra to speak about the elder daughter of Himavān. In other words, He had neglected to inquire about the history of Pārvatī while asking about the glories of Gaṅgā. But Śrī Viśvāmitra appeared to have neglected the exact question posed by Lord Rāmacandra and spoke about Pārvatī’s history. The sage anticipated that Śrī Rāma might wonder why he did so and so he states this verse. He has described Pārvatī’s life as it will be helpful in his description of Gaṅgā’s glories.
