Canto 1 - Boyhood
Bāla-kāṇḍa
Chapter 36: Umā Curses the Demigods
Text 1.36.9

ततो देवाः समुद्विग्नाः पितामहपुरोगमाः।
यदिहोत्पद्यते भूतं कस्तत्प्रतिसहिष्यते॥

tato devāḥ samudvignāḥ pitāmaha-purogamāḥ
yad
ihotpadyate bhūtaṁ kas tat pratisahiṣyate

tataḥ = then; devāḥ = demigods; samudvignāḥ = became frightened; pitāmaha-purogamāḥ = headed by Grandfather Brahmā; yad = that; iha = from Pārvatī; utpadyate = would be born; bhūtam = son; kaḥ = who; tat = the; pratisahiṣyate = can bear.

Then the demigods headed by Grandfather Brahmā became frightened. Who can bear the son that would be born from Pārvatī?

In some manuscripts of Rāmāyaṇa, the word samudyuktāḥ is found instead of samudvignāḥ, indicating that these demigods deliberated and then actively endeavored to prevent such a situation from occurring. [But they failed in their attempts.]
