Chapter 37: The History of Skanda
Text 1.37.6

देवतानां वचः श्रुत्वा सर्वलोकपितामहः।
सान्त्वयन्मधुरैर्वाक्यैस्त्रिदशानिदमब्रवीत्॥

devatānāṁ vacaḥ śrutvā sarva-loka-pitāmahaḥ
sāntvayan
madhurair vākyais tri-daśān idam abravīt

devatānām = of the demigods; vacaḥ = words; śrutvā = hearing; sarva-loka-pitāmahaḥ = the grandfather of all worlds; sāntvayan = pacified and; madhuraiḥ = with sweet; vākyaiḥ = words; tri-daśān = the demigods; idam = as follows; abravīt = spoke to them.

Hearing the words of the demigods, the grandfather of all worlds pacified them with sweet words and spoke to them as follows.

It is impossible to prevent Lord Rudra from engaging in terrible austerities. Therefore, Lord Brahmā did not want the demigods to think along those lines and so he pacified them with sweet words.
