Chapter 39: Sagara’s Sons Search for the Sacrificial Horse
Text 1.39.18

गत्वा तु पृथिवीं सर्वामदृष्ट्वा तं महाबलाः।
योजनायामविस्तारमेकैको धरणीतलम्।
बिभिदुः पुरुषव्याघ्र वज्रस्पर्शसमैर्नखैः॥

gatvā tu pṛthivīṁ sarvām adṛṣṭvā taṁ mahā-balāḥ
yojanāyāma-vistāram
ekaiko dharaṇī-talam
bibhiduḥ
puruṣa-vyāghra vajra-sparśa-samair nakhaiḥ

gatvā tu pṛthivīm sarvām = despite having gone all over the earth; adṛṣṭvā tam = and not seeing the horse; mahā-balāḥ = greatly powerful [princes]; yojana-āyāma-vistāram = the length and breadth of the yojanas of the earth’s surface; eka-ekaḥ = each of those; dharaṇī-talam = of the earth’s surface; bibhiduḥ = pierced; puruṣa-vyāghra = O tiger among men; vajra-sparśa-samaiḥ = whose touch was like that of the thunderbolt; nakhaiḥ = using their nails.

O tiger among men, despite having gone all over the earth and not seeing the horse, each of those greatly powerful [princes] pierced the length and breadth of the yojanas of the earth’s surface using their nails whose touch was like that of the thunderbolt.
