Chapter 4: Kuśa and Lava Meet Lord Rāmacandra
Text 1.4.12-13

तौ राजपुत्रौ कार्त्स्न्येन धर्म्यम् आख्यानम् उत्तमम्।
वाचोविधेयं तत्सर्वं कृत्वा काव्यमनिन्दितौ॥

ऋषीणां च द्विजातीनां साधूनां च समागमे।
यथोपदेशं तत्त्वज्ञौ जगतुस्तौ समाहितौ।
महात्मानौ महाभागौ सर्वलक्षणलक्षितौ॥

tau rāja-putrau kārtsnyena dharmyam ākhyānam uttamam
vāco-vidheyaṁ tat sarvaṁ kṛtvā kāvyam aninditau

ṛṣīṇāṁ ca dvijātīnāṁ sādhūnāṁ ca samāgame
yathopadeśaṁ tattva-jñau jagatus tau samāhitau
mahātmānau mahā-bhāgau sarva-lakṣaṇa-lakṣitau

tau = those two; rāja-putrau = princes; kārtsnyena = that is entirely; dharmyam = in line with Vedic dharma; ākhyānam = historical; uttamam = this supreme; vācaḥ-vidheyam tat sarvam kṛtvā = having memorized it in full; kāvyam = poem known as Rāmayaṇa; aninditau = beyond reproach; ṛṣīṇām ca = of ṛṣis; dvijātīnām = the twiceborn; sādhūnām = sadhus; ca = and; samāgame = in the assembly; yathā upadeśam = as instructed; tattva-jñau = in knowledge of the right readings of the poem; jagatuḥ = sang; tau samāhitau = attentive; mahā-ātmānau = greatly intelligent; mahā-bhāgau = greatly fortunate; sarva-lakṣaṇa-lakṣitau = in knowledge of the characteristics of all words.

Those two princes beyond reproach, in knowledge of the right readings of the poem, attentive, greatly intelligent, greatly fortunate, in knowledge of the characteristics of all words, having memorized it in full, sang as instructed this supreme historical poem known as Rāmāyaṇa that is entirely in line with Vedic dharma in the assembly of ṛṣis, the twiceborn and sādhus.

The two boys didn’t merely study the Rāmāyaṇa and reveal their ability to recall it. They sang it in the assembly of ṛṣis, the twiceborn and sādhus. Kuśa and Lava were beyond reproach for they were singing as instructed. As per the instructions of their spiritual master, they were also tattva-jñau, in knowledge of the principles to determine the correct readings of a composition. They were attentive, not forgetting any portion of the Rāmāyaṇa. Mahā-bhāgau (“greatly fortunate”) indicates that they had that great fortune which gave rise to these qualities [24]. They had memorized it through several memorization drills.
