Chapter 4: Kuśa and Lava Meet Lord Rāmacandra
Text 1.4.20
प्रीतः कश्चिन्मुनिस्ताभ्यां संस्थितः कलशं ददौ।
प्रसन्नो वल्कले कश्चिद्ददौ ताभ्यां महायशाः॥
prītaḥ kaścin munis tābhyāṁ saṁsthitaḥ kalaśaṁ dadau
prasanno valkale kaścid dadau tābhyāṁ mahā-yaśāḥ
prītaḥ = pleased by the singing; kaścit = a; muniḥ = sage; tābhyām = them; saṁsthitaḥ = stood up and; kalaśam = a water pot; dadau = gave; prasannaḥ = pleased with them; valkale = two bark garments; kaścit = a; dadau = gifted; tābhyām = them; mahā-yaśāḥ = a greatly famous sage.
Pleased by the singing, a sage stood up and gave them a water pot. Pleased with them, a greatly famous sage gifted them two bark garments.
[25] saṁsthā sthitau vyavasthāyām (Bhāskara).
Then various sages gifted them as appropriate, out of love. Saṁsthitaḥ here refers to a sage standing up [25]. He did so in order to gift Kuśa and Lava out of great love. Mahā-yaśāḥ indicates that the sage who gifted them two bark garments was famous in the subject of Vedic musicology, that is, he could identify the grades of excellence in singing.
