Chapter 42: Bhagīratha’s Austerities for Gaṅgā’s Descent

द्वात्रिंशच्च सहस्राणि वर्षाणि सुमहायशाः।
तपोवनं गतो राम स्वर्गं लेभे तपोधनः॥
dvātriṁśac ca sahasrāṇi varṣāṇi sumahā-yaśāḥ
tapo-vanaṁ gato rāma svargaṁ lebhe tapo-dhanaḥ
dvātriṁśat ca sahasrāṇi varṣāṇi = for 32,000 years; sumahā-yaśāḥ = Aṁśumān of very great fame; tapaḥ-vanam gataḥ = went to the forest of austerity; rāma = O Rāma; svargam lebhe = he then attain the heavens; tapaḥ-dhanaḥ = and whose wealth was austerity.
O Rāma, Aṁśumān of very great fame and whose wealth was austerity went to a forest of austerity for 32,000 years [for performing austerities.] He then attained the heavens.
He got [residence in] Svarga, but he did not get Gaṅgā [to descend].
