Chapter 44: Bhagīratha Delivers his Uncles
Text 1.44.22

इदमाख्यानमव्यग्रो गङ्गावतरणं शुभम्।
यः शृणोति च काकुत्स्थ सर्वान्कामानवाप्नुयात्।
सर्वे पापाः प्रणश्यन्ति आयुः कीर्तिश्च वर्धते॥

idam ākhyānam avyagro gaṅgāvataraṇaṁ śubham
yaḥ
śṛṇoti ca kākutstha sarvān kāmān avāpnuyāt
sarve
pāpāḥ praṇaśyanti āyuḥ kīrtiś ca vardhate

idam = this; ākhyānam = narration; avyagraḥ = attentively; gaṅgā-avataraṇam = the descent of Gaṅgā; śubham = auspicious; yaḥ = one who; śṛṇoti ca = listens to; kākutstha = O descendant of Kakutstha; sarvān = all; kāmān = his desires; avāpnuyāt = can attain; sarve = all; pāpāḥ = his sins; praṇaśyanti = are destroyed; āyuḥ = his longevity; kīrtiḥ = fame; ca = and; vardhate = increase.

O descendant of Kakutstha, one who attentively listens to this auspicious narration “The descent of Gaṅgā” can attain all his desires. All his sins are destroyed, and his longevity and fame increase.

He now describes the benefit accruing to one who listens to this narration.
