Chapter 47: King Sumati Approaches Viśvāmitra
Text 1.47.11
इक्ष्वाकोस्तु नरव्याघ्र पुत्रः परमधार्मिकः।
अलम्बुसायामुत्पन्नो विशाल इति विश्रुतः॥
ikṣvākos tu nara-vyāghra putraḥ parama-dhārmikaḥ
alambusāyām utpanno viśāla iti viśrutaḥ
ikṣvākoḥ tu = Ikṣvāku’s; nara-vyāghra = O tiger among men; putraḥ = son; parama-dhārmikaḥ = was extremely dhārmika; alambusāyām = to Alambusā; utpannaḥ = born; viśālaḥ iti viśrutaḥ= he was famous as Viśāla.
O tiger among men, Ikṣvāku’s son was extremely dhārmika. Born to Alambusā, he was famous as Viśāla.
Lord Rāma’s second question to the sage Viśvāmitra was: “Which royal dynasty resides in Viśālā?” (1.45.12) The sage begins to answer that question from this verse.
