Canto 1 - Boyhood
Bāla-kāṇḍa
Chapter 57: King Triśaṅku’s Desire
Text 1.57.16

शरणं वः प्रपद्येऽहं शरण्यान्शरणागतः।
प्रत्याख्यातोऽस्मि भद्रं वो वसिष्ठेन महात्मना॥

śaraṇaṁ vaḥ prapadye ’haṁ śaraṇyān śaraṇāgataḥ
pratyākhyāto
’smi bhadraṁ vo vasiṣṭhena mahātmanā

śaraṇam vaḥ prapadye aham = I have come to you considering you my protectors; śaraṇyān = since you are worthy of providing such protection; śaraṇāgataḥ = I have now obtained you as my protectors; pratyākhyātaḥ asmi = I have been disregarded; bhadram vaḥ = may there be auspiciousness unto you; vasiṣṭhena mahā-ātmanā = by the the great soul Vasiṣṭha.

I have come to you considering you my protectors since you are worthy of providing such protection. I have now obtained you as my protectors. May there be auspiciousness unto you. I have been disregarded by the the great soul Vasiṣṭha.

Śaraṇam here indicates that Triśaṅku has sought the protection of Vasiṣṭha’s sons.[2] Śaraṇāgataḥ pratyākhyāto ’smi indicates that he had taken shelter [of Vasiṣṭha] but rejected by him. Why didn’t he go to Vasiṣṭha for help? Because he had been rejected by him. Why did he come to them seeking protection? That is explained in the next verse.

[2] śaraṇaṁ gṛha-rakṣitroḥ.
