Chapter 58: King Triśaṅku Cursed
Text 1.58.22
यज्ञैर्बहुविधैरिष्टं प्रजा धर्मेण पालिताः।
गुरवश्च महात्मानः शीलवृत्तेन तोषिताः॥
yajñair bahu-vidhair iṣṭaṁ prajā dharmeṇa pālitāḥ
guravaś ca mahātmānaḥ śīla-vṛttena toṣitāḥ
yajñaiḥ bahu-vidhaiḥ iṣṭam = I have celebrated a variety of sacrifices; prajāḥ = my subjects; dharmeṇa = according to dharma; pālitāḥ = have been protected; guravaḥ ca =my gurus; mahā-ātmānaḥ = who are great souls; śīla-vṛttena = by my good qualities and conduct; toṣitāḥ = I have pleased.
I have celebrated a variety of sacrifices. My subjects have been protected according to dharma. I have pleased my gurus who are great souls by my good qualities and conduct.
These sacrifices are the regular prescribed sacrifices, distinct from the hundred sacrifices that Triśaṅku had wanted to execute, and had prepared himself to execute, to go to Svarga in his own body. But he could not execute those hundred sacrifices.
