Bāla-kāṇḍa
Chapter 6: The Residents of Ayodhyā
Text 1.6.16
कश्चिन्नरो वा नारी वा नाश्रीमान्नाप्यरूपवान्।
द्रष्टुं शक्यमयोध्यायां नापि राजन्यभक्तिमान्॥
kaścin naro vā nārī vā nāśrīmān nāpy arūpavān
draṣṭuṁ śakyam ayodhyāyāṁ nāpi rājany abhaktimān
kaścit naraḥ vā = man; nārī = woman; vā = or na = no; aśrīmān = who did not have splendor; na api = nor; arūpavān = anyone without beauty; draṣṭum= seen; śakyam = could be; ayodhyāyām = in Ayodhyā; na api nor; rājani = to the king; abhaktimān = devoid of affection to the king.
No man or woman in Ayodhyā who did not have splendor nor anyone without beauty nor anyone devoid of reverential affection to the king could be seen.
Bhakti here means “affection towards a more honorable person.” Every man and woman in Ayodhyā had such affection towards King Daśaratha.
