Chapter 6: The Residents of Ayodhyā
Text 1.6.18

दीर्घायुषो नराः सर्वे धर्मं सत्यं च संश्रिताः।
सहिताः पुत्रपौत्राश्च नित्यं स्त्रीभिः पुरोत्तमे॥

dīrghāyuṣo narāḥ sarve dharmaṁ satyaṁ ca saṁśritāḥ
sahitāḥ putra-pautrāś ca nityaṁ strībhiḥ purottame

dīrgha-āyuṣaḥ = therefore, they were long-lived; narāḥ = men; sarve = all; dharmam = of Vedic dharma; satyam = truthfulness; ca = and; saṁśritāḥ = took shelter; sahitāḥ = endowed with; putra-pautrāḥ = sons and grandsons; ca = and; nityam = always; strībhiḥ = wives; pura-uttame = in that best of cities.

In that best of cities, all men took shelter of Vedic dharma and truthfulness.1 Therefore, they were long-lived and always endowed with wives, sons and grandsons.

1 Satya can also mean the Supreme Truth, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Nārāyaṇa (satyasya satyam). The residents of Ayodhyā were Vaiṣṇavas.
