विप्रस्थितेषु देवेषु विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः।
ऊर्ध्वबाहुर्निरालम्बो वायुभक्षस्तपश्चरन्॥
घर्मे पञ्चतपा भूत्वा वर्षास्वाकाशसंश्रयः।
शिशिरे सलिलस्थायी रात्र्यहानि तपोधनः॥
viprasthiteṣu deveṣu viśvāmitro mahā-muniḥ
ūrdhva-bāhur nirālambo vāyu-bhakṣas tapaś caran
gharme pañca-tapā bhūtvā varṣāsv ākāśa-saṁśrayaḥ
śiśire salila-sthāyī rātry-ahāni tapo-dhanaḥ
vipra-sthiteṣu = when had departed; deveṣu = the devas; viśvāmitraḥ = Viśvāmitra; mahā-muniḥ = the great sage; ūrdhva-bāhuḥ = with his arms raised; nirālambaḥ = standing without any support; vāyu-bhakṣaḥ = subsisting on air alone; tapaḥ caran = performed austerities and; gharme pañca-tapāḥ = by surrounding himself with the five fires in summer; bhūtvā varṣāsu ākāśa-saṁśrayaḥ = remaining directly under the sky in the rainy season; śiśire salila-sthāyī = and under water in the winter; rātri-ahāni = day and night; tapaḥ-dhanaḥ = who was rich with austerities.
When the devas had departed, the great sage Viśvāmitra, who was rich with austerities, performed austerities with his arms raised, standing without any support, subsisting on air alone, and by surrounding himself with the five fires in summer, remaining directly under the sky in the rainy season, and under water in the winter, day and night.
