Chapter 65: Viśvāmitra Becomes a Brahmarṣi
Text 1.65.1
अथ हैमवतीं राम दिशं त्यक्त्वा महामुनिः।
पूर्वां दिशमनुप्राप्य तपस्तेपे सुदारुणम्॥
atha haimavatīṁ rāma diśaṁ tyaktvā mahā-muniḥ
pūrvāṁ diśam anuprāpya tapas tepe sudāruṇam
atha = then; haimavatīm = in the Himalayas; rāma = O Rāma; diśam = his residence; tyaktvā = gave up and; mahā-muniḥ = the great sage Viśvāmitra; pūrvām diśam = the east; anuprāpya = reached; tapaḥ = austerities; tepe = then he performed; su-dāruṇam = extremely terrible.
O Rāma, the great sage Viśvāmitra then gave up his residence in the Himalayas and reached the east. Then he performed extremely terrible austerities.
