Chapter 66: The History of Lord Śiva’s bow
Text 1.66.13
तदेतद्देवदेवस्य धनूरत्नं महात्मनः।
न्यासभूतं तदा न्यस्तमस्माकं पूर्वके विभो॥
tad etad deva-devasya dhanū-ratnaṁ mahātmanaḥ
nyāsa-bhūtaṁ tadā nyastam asmākaṁ pūrvake vibho
tat etat = this is that; deva-devasya = the god of the gods, Lord Śiva; dhanuḥ-ratnam = jewel of bows; mahā-ātmanaḥ = of that great soul; nyāsa-bhūtam tadā = in trust for custodial care; nyastam = which was given by the devas; asmākam = to our; pūrvake = predecessor Devarāta; vibho = O great sage.
O great sage, this is that jewel of bows of that great soul, the god of the gods, Lord Śiva, which was given to our predecessor Devarāta by the devas in trust for custodial care.
“Jewel of bows” means “best of bows.”
