Chapter 74: The Arrival of Paraśurāma
Text 1.74.12
असौम्याः पक्षिणो घोरा मृगाश्चापि प्रदक्षिणाः।
किमिदं हृदयोत्कम्पि मनो मम विषीदति॥
asaumyāḥ pakṣiṇo ghorā mṛgāś cāpi pradakṣiṇāḥ
kim idaṁ hṛdayotkampi mano mama viṣīdati
asaumyāḥ = inauspiciously; pakṣiṇaḥ = the birds; ghorāḥ = are screeching; mṛgāḥ ca api = and the deer; pradakṣiṇāḥ = are moving to the right; kim idam hṛdaya-utkampi = what is this that makes my heart tremble; manaḥ mama viṣīdati = my mind is distressed.
The birds are screeching inauspiciously, and the deer are moving to the right. What is this that makes my heart tremble? My mind is distressed.
The king’s mind was distressed with the thought, “Will these lead to happiness or unhappiness?” because he saw omens indicating both auspiciousness and inauspiciousness.
