Chapter 75: The History of the Bows of Lord Śiva and Lord Viṣṇu
Text 1.75.18
तदा तु जृम्भितं शैवं धनुर्भीमपराक्रमम्।
हुङ्कारेण महादेवः स्तम्भितोऽथ त्रिलोचनः॥
tadā tu jṛmbhitaṁ śaivaṁ dhanur bhīma-parākramam
huṅkāreṇa mahādevaḥ stambhito ’tha trilocanaḥ
tadā tu = then; jṛmbhitam = was stretched; śaivam dhanuḥ = Lord Śiva’s bow; bhīma-parākramam = of terrible prowess; huṅkāreṇa = by Lord Viṣṇu’s sounding of huṁ; mahādevaḥ = Mahādeva; stambhitaḥ = was brought to a standstill; atha = and; trilocanaḥ = of three eyes.
Then, by Lord Viṣṇu’s sounding of huṁ, Lord Śiva’s bow of terrible prowess was stretched and Mahādeva of three eyes was brought to a standstill.
Lord Viṣṇu did not even place an arrow consecrated [with appropriate Vedic mantras] on that bow. Merely by sounding huṁ, Lord Viṣṇu broke Lord Śiva’s bow, [practically speaking,] and Mahādeva became stunned like a tree. Indeed, his third eye could not help him [in this situation].
