Canto 1 - Boyhood
Bāla-kāṇḍa
Chapter 75: The History of the Bows of Lord Śiva and Lord Viṣṇu
Text 1.75.19

देवैस्तदा समागम्य सर्षिसङ्घैः सचारणैः।
याचितौ प्रशमं तत्र जग्मतुस्तौ सुरोत्तमौ॥

devais tadā samāgamya sarṣi-saṅghaiḥ sacāraṇaiḥ
yācitau
praśamaṁ tatra jagmatus tau surottamau

devaiḥ = the devas; tadā = then; samāgamya = came together and; sarṣi-saṅghaiḥ = with the ṛṣis; sa-cāraṇaiḥ = and the cāraṇas; yācitau = pleaded; praśamam = for peace; tatra jagmatuḥ = became peaceful; tau sura-uttamau = consequently, both of the best of celestials.

The devas then came together with the ṛṣis and the cāraṇas and pleaded for peace. Consequently, both of the best of celestials became peaceful.

The devas pleaded with Lord Viṣṇu, “Why should You fight with this boy, Lord Śiva? Please be merciful to him.” And so He stopped the fight.

They consoled Lord Śiva, “Being defeated by our master is not a defect on our part.” And he gave up his pride in being an equal to Lord Viṣṇu [and so stopped the fight].
