अरोगस्तरुणो वाग्मी वपुष्मान्देशकालवित्।
लोके पुरुषसारज्ञः साधुरेको विनिर्मितः॥
arogas taruṇo vāgmī vapuṣmān deśa-kālavit
loke puruṣa-sārajñaḥ sādhur eko vinirmitaḥ
arogaḥ = He was free from physical and mental disturbances; taruṇaḥ = He was youthful; vāgmī = of excellent speech; vapuṣmān = and good bodily state; deśa-kālavit = He was aware of the place and time to engage in Vedic studies; loke = in the world; puruṣa- sārajñaḥ = He knew the essence of men; sādhuḥ = as a saintly person; ekaḥ = to be unrivalled; vinirmitaḥ = and was ascertained.
He was free from physical and mental disturbances. He was youthful, of excellent speech and good bodily state. He was aware of the place and time to engage in Vedic studies. He knew the essence of men and was ascertained to be unrivalled in the world as a saintly person.
This verse is an explanation of the following Śruti text:
yuvā syāt sādhu yuvādhyāyakaḥ. āśiṣṭho draḍhiṣṭho baliṣṭhaḥ. tasyeyaṁ pṛthivī sarvā vittasya pūrṇā syāt. sa eko mānuṣa ānandaḥ.
“Let there be an excellent youth who is a great teacher among students, blessed, strong in mind and body. Let him possess the entire earth filled with its resources. His human happiness is one unit of happiness.” (Taittirīya Upaniṣad 2.8.1)
“He was free from physical and mental disturbances” explains the meaning of “blessed” in the above text. “He was youthful” explains “youth,” “of excellent speech” explains “a great teacher among students,” “good bodily state” explains “strong in body” and “aware of the place and time to engage in Vedic studies” explains “excellent [youth].”
Puruṣa-sārajñaḥ: Śrī Rāma knew everything in the heart of a man merely upon seeing him once. Sādhuḥ indicates that He was saintly even to those who offended Him, for a true saint is one who is saintly to even those who offend him: apakāriṣu yaḥ sādhuḥ sa sādhur iti kīrtitaḥ.
