Chapter 1: Daśaratha Desires to Appoint Rāma as the Crown Prince

स तु श्रेष्ठैर्गुणैर्युक्तः प्रजानां पार्थिवात्मजः।
बहिश्चर इव प्राणो बभूव गुणतः प्रियः॥
sa tu śreṣṭhair guṇair yuktaḥ prajānāṁ pārthivātmajaḥ
bahiścara iva prāṇo babhūva guṇataḥ priyaḥ
saḥ tu = the; śreṣṭhaiḥ = with [other] excellent; guṇaiḥ = auspicious qualities; yuktaḥ = was endowed; prajānām = to the citizens; pārthiva-ātmajaḥ = prince; bahiḥ-caraḥ = their external; iva = like; prāṇaḥ = life-air; babhūva = He became; guṇataḥ = because of His good qualities; priyaḥ = dear.
The prince was endowed with [other] excellent auspicious qualities. Because of His good qualities, He became dear to the citizens, like their external life-air.
