शास्त्रज्ञश्च कृतज्ञश्च पुरुषान्तरकोविदः।
यः प्रग्रहानुग्रहयोर्यथान्यायं विचक्षणः॥
śāstrajñaś ca kṛtajñaś ca puruṣāntara-kovidaḥ
yaḥ pragrahānugrahayor yathā-nyāyaṁ vicakṣaṇaḥ
śāstrajñaḥ ca = He knew the other Vedic scriptures; kṛtajñaḥ ca = and the conclusions [of all scriptures]; puruṣa-antara-kovidaḥ = He was expert in understanding the gradation of persons; yaḥ = He was famous as being; pragraha-anugrahayoḥ = of accepting and maintaining friendship and so on; yathā-nyāyam = in accordance with the scriptures; vicakṣaṇaḥ = capable.
He knew the other Vedic scriptures and the conclusions [of all scriptures]. He was expert in understanding the gradation of persons. He was famous as being capable of accepting and maintaining friendship and so on in accordance with the scriptures.
[Though kṛtajñaḥ can indicate that Rāma was grateful to others,] kṛtajñaḥ here specifically indicates that He knew the conclusions [of all scriptures].1 Thus, the point made in text 11 is not redundantly iterated here. Rāmacandra knew the specific natures of people, the saintly and the unsaintly, simply upon seeing them [once]. He accepted and maintained friendship and so on without transgressing scriptural boundaries.
