Chapter 1: Daśaratha Desires to Appoint Rāma as the Crown Prince

तत्रापि निवसन्तौ तौ तर्प्यमाणौ च कामतः।
भ्रातरौ स्मरतां वीरौ वृद्धं दशरथं नृपम्॥
tatrāpi nivasantau tau tarpyamāṇau ca kāmataḥ
bhrātarau smaratāṁ vīrau vṛddhaṁ daśarathaṁ nṛpam
tatra = there; api = despite; nivasantau = residing; tau = the; tarpyamāṇau = being gratified; ca = and; kāmataḥ = with all desirable objects of enjoyment; bhrātarau = the brothers Bharata and Śatrughna; smaratām = remembered; vīrau = the two heroes; vṛddham = the old; daśaratham = Daśaratha; nṛpam = King.
Despite residing there and being gratified with all desirable objects of enjoyment, the two heroes, the brothers Bharata and Śatrughna, remembered the old King Daśaratha.
At Their maternal home, Bharata and Śatrughna were abundantly pampered with affection. Vīrau indicates that They were greatly enthusiastic. They now wondered if King Daśaratha, who had now become old and [hence] not fully capable of maintaining his kingdom, had made Rāma his heir apparent.1
