Chapter 1: Daśaratha Desires to Appoint Rāma as the Crown Prince

यमशक्रसमो वीर्ये बृहस्पतिसमो मतौ।
महीधरसमो धृत्यां मत्तश्च गुणवत्तरः॥
yama-śakra-samo vīrye bṛhaspati-samo matau
mahīdhara-samo dhṛtyāṁ mattaś ca guṇavattaraḥ
yama-śakra-samaḥ = He is equal to Yama and Indra; vīrye = in heroism; bṛhaspati-samaḥ = Bṛhaspati; matau = in intelligence; mahīdhara-samaḥ = a mountain; dhṛtyām = in patience; mattaḥ = than me; ca = and; guṇavattaraḥ = endowed with more auspicious qualities.
“He is equal to Yama and Indra in heroism, Bṛhaspati in intelligence, a mountain in patience and endowed with more auspicious qualities than me.
The previous verse stated that Rāma was dearer to the world than Daśaratha. Now it is stated that Rāma has more auspicious qualities than Daśaratha. Since Śrī Rāmacandra’s heroism cannot be considered to be equal to either Yama or Indra alone, He is said to be equal to Yama and Indra in heroism.
