Chapter 7: Mantharā Instructs Kaikeyī to Stop the Coronation
Text 2.7.17

कैकेयी त्वब्रवीत्कुब्जां कच्चित्क्षेमं न मन्थरे।
विषण्णवदनां हि त्वां लक्षये भृशदुःखिताम्।
मन्थरे तद्ब्रवीह्यद्य कुतस्ते भयमागतम्॥

kaikeyī tv abravīt kubjāṁ kaccit kṣemaṁ na manthare
viṣaṇṇa-vadanāṁ hi tvāṁ lakṣaye bhṛśa-duḥkhitām
manthare tad bravīhy adya kutas te bhayam āgatam

kaikeyī tu = Kaikeyī; abravīt = told; kubjām = the hunchback; kaccit kṣemam = everything well for me; na = isn’t; manthare = Mantharā; viṣaṇṇa-vadanām hi = face is sad; tvām = your; lakṣaye = I can see that; bhṛśa-duḥkhitām = you are very distressed; manthare = Mantharā; tat = so; bravīhi = tell me; adya = now; kutaḥ = why; te = you; bhayam āgatam = are afraid.

Kaikeyī told the hunchback, “Mantharā, isn’t everything well for me? I can see that your face is sad. You are very distressed. Mantharā, so tell me. Why are you afraid now?”
