Chapter 7: Mantharā Instructs Kaikeyī to Stop the Coronation
Text 2.7.21
सास्म्यगाधे भये मग्ना दुःखशोकसमन्विता।
दह्यमानानलेनेव त्वद्धितार्थमिहागता॥
sāsmy agādhe bhaye magnā duḥkha-śoka-samanvitā
dahyamānānaleneva tvad-dhitārtham ihāgatā
sā asmi = I am; agādhe = in unfathomable; bhaye = fear; magnā = drowning; duḥkha-śoka-samanvitā = I am filled with distress and lamentation; dahyamānā = I am burning; analena = in fire; iva = as if; tvat-hita-artham = for your good; iha = here; āgatā = I have come.
I am drowning in unfathomable fear. I am filled with distress and lamentation as if I am burning in fire. I have come here for your good.
Mantharā was filled with distress, upon hearing that Rāma would be coronated, and lamentation because Bharata would not be coronated. She wanted the latter, not the former.
Mantharā then anticipated that Kaikeyī would ask her, “Where is the question of you being in distress when I am in distress?” and spoke the following words.
