Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 8: The Conversation Between Kaikeyī and Mantharā
Text 2.8.4
शोचामि दुर्मतित्वं ते का हि प्राज्ञा प्रहर्षयेत्।
अरेः सपत्नीपुत्रस्य वृद्धिं मृत्योरिवागताम्॥
śocāmi durmatitvaṁ te kā hi prājñā praharṣayet
areḥ sapatnī-putrasya vṛddhiṁ mṛtyor ivāgatām
śocāmi = I am sorry; durmatitvam = that intelligence is perverse; te = your; kā hi = which woman; prājñā = of commendable intelligence; praharṣayet = would be happy; areḥ = of her enemy; sapatnī-putrasya = her co-wife’s son; vṛddhim = of the enhancement; mṛtyoḥ = that is death; iva = as good as; āgatām = with the arrival.
I am sorry that your intelligence is perverse. Which woman of commendable intelligence would be happy with the arrival of the enhancement of her enemy, her co-wife’s son, that is as good as death?
After directly pointing out that Kaikeyī was ignorant, Mantharā now indirectly points out the same. She accuses Kaikeyī of having a perverse intelligence for she is happy about a disaster coming upon her.
