Chapter 8: The Conversation Between Kaikeyī and Mantharā
Text 2.8.25
असावत्यन्तनिर्भग्नस्तव पुत्रो भविष्यति।
अनाथवत्सुखेभ्यश्च राजवंशाच्च वत्सले॥
asāv atyanta-nirbhagnas tava putro bhaviṣyati
anāthavat sukhebhyaś ca rāja-vaṁśāc ca vatsale
asau atyanta-nirbhagnaḥ = completely shattered and therefore driven away; tava = your; putraḥ = son; bhaviṣyati = will be; anāthavat = like an orphan; sukhebhyaḥ ca = from all kinds of comfort; rāja-vaṁśāt = the royal lineage; ca = and; vatsale = O one affectionate to your son.
O one affectionate to your son, your son will be completely shattered and therefore driven away like an orphan from all kinds of comfort and the royal lineage.
After stating that Bharata would [permanently] lose the kingdom, Mantharā here refutes Kaikeyī’s assertion in text 19 that even if Bharata does not get the kingdom, He will enjoy the happiness of ruling it [for Śrī Rāma treats His brothers the way He treats Himself].
