Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 8: The Conversation Between Kaikeyī and Mantharā
Text 2.8.33
तस्माद्राजगृहादेव वनं गच्छतु ते सुतः।
एतद्धि रोचते मह्यं भृशं चापि हितं तव॥
tasmād rājagṛhād eva vanaṁ gacchatu te sutaḥ
etad dhi rocate mahyaṁ bhṛśaṁ cāpi hitaṁ tava
tasmāt = so; rājagṛhāt = from Rājagṛha; eva = directly; vanam = to the forest; gacchatu = let go; te = your; sutaḥ = son; etat hi = this is what; rocate = like; mahyam = I; bhṛśam = very; ca = and; api = too; hitam = it will be good; tava = for you.
So, let your son go to the forest directly from Rājagṛha.1 This is what I like and it will be very good for you too.
1 According to Rāmāyaṇa 2.67.7, Rājagṛha was the city in Kekaya that Bharata and Śatrughna had gone to.
[Mantharā speculated that] because Bharata would be killed by Rāma [if He were to come to Ayodhyā], He should directly to the forest from Rājagṛha and not come to Ayodhyā and be killed.
GLOSS. Rājagṛhāt indicates that [according to Mantharā,] Bharata should give up any hope of [living at] Kaikeyī’s home [and go to the forest].
