Text 2.16.23
दीक्षितं व्रतसम्पन्नं वराजिनधरं शुचिम्।
कुरङ्गशृङ्गपाणिं च पश्यन्ती त्वां भजाम्यहम्॥
dīkṣitaṁ vrata-sampannaṁ varājinadharaṁ śucim
kuraṅga-śṛṅga-pāṇiṁ ca paśyantī tvāṁ bhajāmy aham
dīkṣitam = You initiated into the sacrifice; vrata-sampannam = fulfill the required vows; vara-ajinadharam = wear fine deer skin; śucim = maintain the principles of purity; kuraṅga-śṛṅga-pāṇim = hold the horn of a kuraṅga deer in Your hand; ca = and; paśyantī = so that I can see; tvām = You; bhajāmi = serve; aham = I.
I serve You so that I can see You initiated into the sacrifice, wear fine deer skin, fulfill the required vows, maintain the principles of purity and hold the horn of a kuraṅga deer in Your hand.
Initiation into the sacrifice includes wearing fine deer skin which is superior to wearing cloth.
Vrata-sampannam indicates that Sītā-devī wanted to see Rāma as the yajamāna, the sponsor of a Vedic sacrifice, annointed with fresh butter. When the sage [Vasiṣṭha] instructs Rāma to fast, in accordance with His youth, He would fast four times over out of respect and faith.
Śucim. When He is instructed by the sage, “Don’t touch any woman,” out of apprehension [that He would disobey the sage], He would bathe Himself if the border of Sītā’s garment had touched Him even though touching Sītā-devī, His religiously wedded wife, was not a defect.
Sītā-devī prayed for the ultimate result and so did not pray for any intermediate benefit which would automatically come about if the ultimate result is obtained. Therefore, she didn’t pray for the removal of obstacles to His coronation. This is similar to Sāvitrī’s prayer [to Yamarāja] after she had showed him her [dead] husband. She had prayed to him, “I want to have many sons from him.” [She didn’t pray to him to give life back to her husband, but] her prayer would automatically ensure that her husband came back to life.
Devotees of the Lord serve Him so that they can see Him [and serve Him everlastingly with love]. Similarly, she also wished to serve Him so that she could see [as described above and serve Him everlastingly with love].
