Chapter 18: Kaikeyī Informs Rāma About the two Boons
Text 2.18.1
स ददर्शासने रामो निषण्णं पितरं शुभे।
कैकेयीसहितं दीनं मुखेन परिशुष्यता॥
sa dadarśāsane rāmo viṣaṇṇaṁ pitaraṁ śubhe
kaikeyī-sahitaṁ dīnaṁ mukhena pariśuṣyatā
saḥ dadarśa = saw; āsane = couch; rāmaḥ = Rāma; viṣaṇṇam = King Daśaratha was dejected; pitaram = His father; śubhe = on an auspicious; kaikeyī-sahitam = with Kaikeyī; dīnam = and morose; mukhena = with a face; pariśuṣyatā = that was drying up.
Āsane here indicates that Daśaratha was on his couch [and not a seat] for it will be noted in text 2.19.17 that it was a gold decorated couch.
