Chapter 18: Kaikeyī Informs Rāma About the two Boons
Text 2.18.22
एष मह्यं वरं दत्त्वा पुरा मामभिपूज्य च।
स पश्चात्तप्यते राजा यथान्यः प्राकृतस्तथा॥
eṣa mahyaṁ varaṁ dattvā purā mām abhipūjya ca
sa paścāt tapyate rājā yathānyaḥ prākṛtas tathā
eṣaḥ = this person; mahyam = me; varam = a boon; dattvā = gave and; purā = in the past; mām = me; abhipūjya ca = honored well; saḥ = the; paścāt = then; tapyate = repents; rājā = king; yathā = like; anyaḥ = a common; prākṛtaḥ tathā = materialist.
This person gave me a boon in the past and honored me well. The king then repents like a common materialist.1
