Chapter 19: Rāma Promises to Leave for the Forest
Text 2.19.2
एवमस्तु गमिष्यामि वनं वस्तुमहं त्वितः।
जटाजिनधरो राज्ञः प्रतिज्ञामनुपालयन्॥
evam astu gamiṣyāmi vanaṁ vastum ahaṁ tv itaḥ
jaṭājinadharo rājñaḥ pratijñam anupālayan
evam = so; astu = let it be; gamiṣyāmi = and leave; vanam = in the forest; vastum = to live; aham tu = I; itaḥ = this city; jaṭā-ajinadharaḥ = will wear matted hair and deer skin; rājñaḥ = king’s; pratijñam = of the promise; anupālayan = in fulfillment.
Let it be so. In fulfillment of the king’s promise, I will wear matted hair and deer skin, and leave this city to live in the forest.
NOTE. This is an instance of the Supreme Lord’s renunciation, which is one of His opulences as noted by Prabhupāda:
The word bhagavān is explained thus by Parāśara Muni: one who is full in six opulences, who has full strength, full fame, wealth, knowledge, beauty and renunciation, is Bhagavān, or the Supreme Personality of Godhead. While Kṛṣṇa was present on this earth, He displayed all six opulences. Therefore great sages like Parāśara Muni have all accepted Kṛṣṇa as the Supreme Personality of Godhead. (Bhagavad-gītā 10.1 purport)
And for the same reason, great sages have accepted Lord Rāmacandra to be the Personality of Godhead Himself.
