Chapter 20: Kausalyā’s Lamentation
Text 2.20.1
तस्मिंस्तु पुरुषव्याघ्रे निष्क्रामति कृताञ्जलौ।
आर्तशब्दो महाञ्जज्ञे स्त्रीणामन्तःपुरे तदा॥
tasmiṁs tu puruṣa-vyāghre niṣkrāmati kṛtāñjalau
ārta-śabdo mahāñ jajñe strīṇām antaḥ-pure tadā
tasmin tu puruṣa-vyāghre = when Prince Rāma; niṣkrāmati = departed; kṛta-añjalau = with His palms joined in supplication; ārta-śabdaḥ = a cry of pain; mahān = great; jajñe = arose; strīṇām = from the women; antaḥ-pure tadā = in the inner quarters.
A great cry of pain arose from the women in the inner quarters when Prince Rāma departed with His palms joined in supplication.
