Chapter 20: Kausalyā’s Lamentation
Text 2.20.7
स हि चान्तःपुरे घोरमार्तशब्दं महीपतिः।
पुत्रशोकाभिसन्तप्तः श्रुत्वा व्यालीयतासने॥
sa hi cāntaḥ-pure ghoram ārta-śabdaṁ mahī-patiḥ
putra-śokābhisantaptaḥ śrutvā vyālīyatāsane
saḥ hi = the; ca = and; antaḥ-pure = in the inner quarters; ghoram = the terrible; ārta-śabdam = cries; mahī-patiḥ = king; putra-śoka-abhisantaptaḥ = afflicted by sorrow for his son; śrutvā = hearing; vyālīyata = hid himself out of embarrassment; āsane = in his bed.
And the king, hearing the terrible cries in the inner quarters, afflicted by sorrow for his son, hid himself in his bed out of embarassment.
