Chapter 20: Kausalyā’s Lamentation
Text 2.20.40
अतो दुःखतरं किं नु प्रमदानां भविष्यति।
मम शोको विलापश्च यादृशोऽयमनन्तकः॥
ato duḥkhataraṁ kiṁ nu pramadānāṁ bhaviṣyati
mama śoko vilāpaś ca yādṛśo ’yam anantakaḥ
ataḥ = than that; duḥkhataram = more distressing; kim = what; nu = indeed; pramadānām = for women; bhaviṣyati = can be; mama = my; śokaḥ = misery; vilāpaḥ = lamentation; ca = and; yādṛśaḥ = much of; ayam = this; anantakaḥ = will be difficult to overcome.
What indeed can be more distressing for women than that? This much of misery and lamentation will be difficult to overcome.
Yādṛśaḥ indicates that Kausalyā-devī thinks that her misery and lamentation would be boundless, that is, beyond her ability to describe.
