Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 29: Sītā Persists in Requesting Him to Take Her to the Forest
Text 2.29.7

पतिहीना तु या नारी न सा शक्ष्यति जीवितुम्।
काममेवंविधं राम त्वया मम विदर्शितम्॥

pati-hīnā tu yā nārī na sā śakṣyati jīvitum
kāmam evaṁ-vidhaṁ rāma tvayā mama vidarśitam

pati-hīnā tu = is without her husband; = who; nārī = a woman; na śakṣyati = cannot; jīvitum = survive; kāmam = often; evam-vidham = in this manner; rāma = Rāma; tvayā = You; mama = me; vidarśitam = have instructed.

A woman who is without her husband cannot survive. Rāma, You have often instructed me in this manner.

GLOSS. [The glossator reads nidarśitam instead of vidarśitam.] The second line means: “Rāma, You have whimsically told me to conduct myself under the shelter of Bharata and so on because a woman without her husband cannot live.” It can also be split into kāmam evaṁ-vidhaṁ rāma tvayā amama nidarśitam: “Rāma, You have revealed Your desire without considering that I belong to You.”
