Chapter 28: Rāma Refuses to Accept Her Request
Text 2.28.1
स एवं ब्रुवतीं सीतां धर्मज्ञो धर्मवत्सलः।
न नेतुं कुरुते बुद्धिं वने दुःखानि चिन्तयन्॥
sa evaṁ bruvatīṁ sītāṁ dharmajño dharma-vatsalaḥ
na netuṁ kurute buddhiṁ vane duḥkhāni cintayan
saḥ1 evam = thus; bruvatīm sītām = [though] Sītā had spoken; dharmajñaḥ = Śrī Rāma, who knew dharma; dharma-vatsalaḥ = and who was devoted to dharma; na = not; netum = to take [her with Him]; kurute buddhim = decided; vane = in [living in] the forest; duḥkhāni = the difficulties; cintayan = considering.
[Though] Sītā had spoken thus, Śrī Rāma, who knew dharma and who was devoted to dharma, decided to not take [her with Him], considering the difficulties in [living in] the forest.
