Chapter 28: Rāma Refuses to Accept Her Request
Text 2.28.18
अतीव वातास्तिमिरं बुभुक्षा चास्ति नित्यशः।
भयानि च महान्त्यत्र ततो दुःखतरं वनम्॥
atīva vātās timiraṁ bubhukṣā cāsti nityaśaḥ
bhayāni ca mahānty atra tato duḥkhataraṁ vanam
atīva = [there are] excessive; vātāḥ = winds; timiram = the nights are extremely dark [there]; bubhukṣā = extreme hunger; ca = and; asti = is [felt there]; nityaśaḥ = all the time; bhayāni = dangers; ca = and; mahānti = great; atra = in the forest; tataḥ = so; duḥkhataram = is a greater misery; vanam = a forest.
In the forest, [there are] excessive winds and great dangers all the time. Extreme hunger is [felt there] and the nights are extremely dark [there]. So, a forest is a greater misery.
