क्रोधलोभौ विमोक्तव्यौ कर्तव्या तपसे मतिः।
न भेतव्यं च भेतव्ये नित्यं दुःखमतो वनम्॥

krodha-lobhau vimoktavyau kartavyā tapase matiḥ
na bhetavyaṁ ca bhetavye nityaṁ duḥkham ato vanam

krodha-lobhau = anger and greed; vimoktavyau kartavyā = have to be abandoned; tapase = [should be fixed] on austerity; matiḥ = one’s mind; na bhetavyam ca = one should not be frightened; bhetavye = of those that are [naturally] frightening; nityam = always; duḥkham = is misery; ataḥ = therefore; vanam = a forest.

Anger and greed have to be abandoned. One’s mind [should be] always [fixed] on austerity. One should not be frightened of those that are [naturally] frightening. Therefore, a forest is misery.
