Chapter 28: Rāma Refuses to Accept Her Request
Text 2.28.26

वनं तु नेतुं न कृता मतिस्तदा बभूव रामेण यदा महात्मना।
न तस्य सीता वचनं चकार तत्ततोऽब्रवीद्राममिदं सुदुःखिता॥

vanaṁ tu netuṁ na kṛtā matis tadā
babhūva rāmeṇa yadā mahātmanā
na tasya sītā vacanaṁ cakāra tat
tato ’bravīd rāmam idaṁ suduḥkhitā

vanam = to the forest; tu = but; netum = to take her; na = not; kṛtā matiḥ tadā babhūva = decided; rāmeṇa = Rāma; yadā = when; mahā-ātmanā = the great soul; na = not; tasya = His; sītā = Sītā; vacanam cakāra tat = did accept instructions; tataḥ = then; abravīt = she spoke; rāmam = to Rāma; idam = as follows; suduḥkhitā = in great distress.

But when the great soul Rāma decided to not take her to the forest, Sītā did not accept His instructions. In great distress, she then spoke to Rāma as follows.
